Relocating Our Roots: Project Statement

Relocating Our Roots is a web project exploring the themes of home, family history, tradition and work. We created a website of writing and digital photography and in the process learned web design and computer skills. We examined their lives as single mothers, and considered the vital but unpaid work of raising and caring for our children. We wrote our stories for publication on the World Wide Web, and illustrated them with digital photographs.

We reside in Rensselaer County, many of us in the Taylor Apartments. Some of us are Troy natives, while some of us came to Troy from New York City, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. We have built communities of family members and friends to sustain us through the chaos of single parenting, financial instability and relocation. With “Relocating Our Roots” we have created an on-line community to supplement those ties.

We have collectively devised strategies for self-expression and empowerment; and gained the tools by which we may represent ourselves on the Internet. As we work, this site will grow -- so please make a return visit.
